Exum creates scientific instruments and software ecosystems that accelerate the discovery of scientific data and speed of development for their clients. The company pioneered accessible, high-performance analytical chemistry with Massbox, the world’s first desktop LALI-TOF mass spectrometer.
This high-performance technology brings powerful mass spectrometry out of traditional labs, giving scientists and engineers trace-level detection across the periodic table—wherever they need it.
At its inception, Massbox broke barriers with its unmatched sophistication, accessible software, and lower costs than traditional lab equipment. To properly market this product, Exum knew the company would need a brand identity to capture this revolutionary technology’s spirit and make it approachable to a broad range of users.

Exum chose Studio Forum for our ability to listen closely, understand complex technology, and translate it into clear, compelling branding that resonates with diverse scientific audiences. Our team was tasked with developing a brand that the Exum team could launch with confidence—one that would convey their unique position, make a splash in the biotech space, and enable them to gather important market intelligence.
Through collaborative workshops and strategic discussions with the Exum team, we worked to deeply understand Exum’s unique capabilities and Massbox’s user benefits. This process uncovered four key brand attributes: innovation, ease of use, precision, and empowerment. Our solution-first approach ensured that the company’s brand identity would look striking while clearly communicating its value proposition.

We took inspiration from Exum’s product design and continued the palette of dominant black with minimal elements of bright blue, balanced with subtle shades of grey. We also evolved the existing logo, simplifying and rebalancing the letterforms to align with its sophisticated brand personality. A slight glow effect on the “U” is another nod to Massbox’s unique instrument design, which features a glowing blue stripe.
This bold, modern logo and vibrant color palette evoke the energy and precision of Exum’s products. The brand identity also aligns with the physical design of the mass spectrometer, creating brand cohesion. This design system highlights Massbox’s portability and accessibility, reinforcing its role as a practical yet powerful tool for scientific analysis, and helping Exum connect with scientists and engineers who are looking for advanced tools to simplify their workflows.

Massbox stands out from other scientific instruments because of its sleek, sophisticated, and minimal approach to design. We embraced this aesthetic whole-heartedly and let it lead the way in Exum’s website design and experience, setting them apart from their competitors.
The site profiles Exum’s expertise, product, and people in a way that’s functional as well as interactive. It incorporates the illumination effect from the logo with subtle motion animation to encourage user interaction. We also designed proprietary icons to pair with the company’s key messages and applications.
